D’zyia Edwards gives us the insider guide to traveling to Zanzibar during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Pamela – Why travel during the pandemic?
D’zyia – It had been a long while since I had a holiday due to lockdown in the UK – and I really needed it. I wanted to visit family and friends that I wasn’t able to see during this whole pandemic. As the rules of lockdown started to ease, I took this opportunity to finally be able to go on holiday!
Pamela – Did you have any concerns about traveling?
D’zyia – My biggest concern was getting to the airport and being told we weren’t able to fly. Although my flight hadn’t been cancelled and Tanzania was open to visitors, I still had it in the back of my mind that we would be refused entry at the airport.
Pamela – How was your journey any different to previous travel experiences?
D’zyia – It was even better. Most planes were empty, with half the plane being completely unoccupied. I had plenty of space to social distance – and plenty of legroom! I managed to secure entire rows of seats just to myself. It felt way better than normal economy travel.
Pamela – Were you satisfied with the Covid-19 safety measures implemented along your journey?
D’zyia – Yes. The airports were much quieter than usual so social distancing measures could actually take place. Masks were worn by everyone. Although some airports did get busy, masks were required to go through customs, security, and on the plane.
Pamela – Were you asked for any personal Covid-19 information in transit?
D’zyia – A negative Covid-19 certificate is not required to leave the UK or to enter Zanzibar – and return. However, for personal reasons, I did have one done beforehand. Luckily it came back negative. I was only asked to fill out a form to return into the UK.
Pamela – How did your UK Covid-19 experience compare to what you experienced in Zanzibar?
D’zyia – Completely different. Zanzibar is free and open to tourists. There’s so much more to do and much less restrictive. Whereas, in the UK there are so many changing rules and regulations surrounding Covid, which is limiting what we’re allowed to do.
Pamela – Did you feel unwell or experience any Covid-19 symptoms during your stay – or after your return home?
D’zyia – Not at all.
Pamela – What advice would you give to people concerned about traveling to Zanzibar during the pandemic?
D’zyia – Don’t be afraid. Practise social distancing. Sanitise your hands. Wear your mask where appropriate. The airports are much quieter and emptier, making the whole process a lot quicker and smoother. This is a fantastic time to travel.
